Draved Skov, Denmark

This small (0.9 km2) protected area amidst fields and pastures is not untouched, of course, but I have included it because it is about as near as one can get to natural forest in this part of Europe. Parts of the forest are almost 200 years old1. The most important tree species are Opens internal link in current windowFagus sylvatica (European beech) and Opens internal link in current windowQuercus robur (pedunculate oak). Opens internal link in current windowPicea sitchensis (Sitka spruce), which is much planted in Denmark, is present in places. Tree species diversity is low and most species are easy to identify. There are numerous small roads in the forest. Annual precipitation is 860 mm and average annual temperature 8°C.
